Architectural designer and licensed engineer collaborate on release of architectural details and master specifications in accordance with the IRC Appendix BL for Hemp-Lime.
A new resource for sustainable construction is now available with the release of "Hemp Lime Illustrated, First Edition". Authored by Caroline Dunn, an architectural designer with BIOBUILD, and Wilfredo Paz, a licensed engineer with Piece by Paz, this guide serves as a template for contractors, engineers, architects, designers, and homeowners. After gaining years of experience in hemp lime building in the US, Caroline and Wilfredo recognized the need for an accessible resource covering the technical aspects of hemp lime construction.
"Hemp Lime Illustrated, First Edition'' includes detailed architectural drawings and CSI MasterFormat specifications for hand-cast, wood-framed, one-story dwellings, offering best practices for construction at key intersections between biobased and non biobased building elements. It builds upon the International Residential Code's Appendix BL, giving readers a head start on implementation for new hemp lime projects in the U.S.
BIOBUILD is a design studio working to decarbonize the construction sector by designing with biobased materials and advocating for industrial hemp and other plants in construction. Piece by Paz is a California based engineering firm dedicated to sustainable construction practices using materials like hemp-lime insulation.
BIOBUILD was awarded “Hemp House of the Year 2023” by the US Hemp Building Association and Hemp Building Magazine. Piece by Paz was the engineer of record for the first permitted hemp lime accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in California in 2021.
